Nexium Capsules
Nexium is an acid-blocking medication that is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other stomach disorders. It is also used to treat conditions like ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. It’s used to treat adults with GERD who have difficulty swallowing food and who also have symptoms of ulcers (such as persistent or recurring acid reflux). Nexium works by blocking the acid production in the stomach, reducing the amount of stomach acid the acid backs up into the esophagus. This helps to keep your stomach and esophagus healthy for longer periods of time.
Nexium is taken once daily, with or without food, and should be taken at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels of the medication in your body. It’s important to take this medication for the full prescribed length of time to prevent the development of side effects, such as a heart attack or stroke. Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and should not be taken by people who take medications that also block the proton pump. People who are allergic to any of the ingredients in Nexium or who have a history of allergic reactions to any other PPI such as aspirin, diltiazem, ketoconazole, rifampin, and other PPI medications should avoid taking Nexium. People who have a history of kidney disease should not take Nexium.
Common Side Effects
Nexium is generally well tolerated. Headache, diarrhea, and stomach pain have been reported, with some people feeling better within a few hours of taking the medication. These side effects are generally mild and go away within a few days. However, some people may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. If you experience any of these symptoms or have any concerns, do not discontinue your medication without consulting your doctor.
If you notice any unusual symptoms, such as unusual bleeding or bruising, or if you notice any of these signs of an allergic reaction, immediately stop taking the medication and contact your doctor immediately. In rare cases, the condition can be fatal.
If you experience a persistent or severe allergic reaction that lasts for more than 3 days, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor immediately.
